R2-D2 Wins October Poll
The poll results are in! R2-D2 from Star Wars was voted the favorite robot in our October poll with 23% of the votes. It was a close contest all month with Star Trek's Data coming in just a few votes behind at 22% of the votes.
To date, R2-D2 has appeared in nine out of the ten Star Wars films. As an “astromech droid,” R2-D2's function is to maintain and repair starships and other technology (as opposed to C-3PO, a "protocol droid" specializing in translation, etiquette and cultural customs).
Lucasfilm, the production company founded by filmmaker and Star Wars creator George Lucas, registered "droid" as a trademark in 1977.
